10 Ways to De-Stress After Work

As women, we have many responsibilities, but those shouldn’t stop us from taking care of ourselves. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so it’s important to take a moment to reflect on our work-life balance and to make sure we aren’t letting our jobs get in the way of a happy brain. Here are 10 ways to help yourself feel less stressed after a long day of work:

1) Meditation

I’m not saying you have to go into a full-on “Zen Mode”, but taking a minute to relax your breathing and ease your mind can do wonders for your not-so-sunny disposition. There are plenty of YouTube videos that offer free meditation sessions, so why not take advantage of one when you feel too wired to sleep? I promise they will have you relaxed in no time!

2) Bullet Journaling

As an avid writer, this is one of my favorites to do. Writing down goals, accomplishments, or even “I feel” statements can be very helpful when trying to compartmentalize your thoughts. Having that visual aid once your ideas are written down can be extremely helpful, and sometimes it’s just a nice reprieve to write about something that doesn’t have to do with a job.

3) Take a Bath

Ah yes, ‘ole faithful. This one never fails me, and I hope it’ll do the same for you. Whether you’ve got bath salts, bath bombs, or just some classic bubble bath soap, sitting down for a good soak should help release some of that tension that you’ve been holding in. You can add to the ambiance by playing some calming music, lighting a candle, or even reading a book. The possibilities are endless, and sometimes it’s nice just to have a moment of peace and quiet in the bathroom, away from everyone else.

4) Put Away the Electronics

I know, I know, this one is scary. However, giving yourself a break from the constant notifications on your phone, especially if they are work related, might be just what you need. Make sure you let a few people know that you’re going off the grid though so they don’t think you’re M.I.A, otherwise you might have your peaceful day interrupted by police officers knocking at your door.

5) Read a Book

I don’t know who needs to hear this (probably me, tbh), but you need to stop binging Netflix and go read a book!! Your brain will thank you, and so will your eyes. Pull yourself out of the butt-indent that you’ve most likely made on your couch after being inside for the past fourteen months and go find the nearest library. I bet your local librarians will be very happy to see you, and who knows, maybe you can even get a little crazy by reading your book outside!

6) Take a Walk

Walking can help you focus, and you’ll be getting in some cardio while you think so it’s a win-win. Taking a walk around the block can also be a good way to socialize safely with a friend if you’re not vaccinated. If you aren’t taking a buddy with you, please remember to stay in well-lit areas and to carry your phone/mace on you in case of an emergency.

7) Talk with a Friend or Family Member

If your social battery isn’t totally spent after a long day at the office, give somebody a call or check up on your favorite person. Maybe it’s a parent or maybe it’s your bff, but I’m guessing that there’s somebody you’ve been out of contact with for a hot minute and now would be the perfect time to focus on them instead of next work project.

8) Binge Some Netflix

I know I said earlier that you should read a book instead of binging Netflix, but sometimes you just need a good Gilmore Girls marathon after a long day. Watching your comfort movie or tv show can be very relaxing, especially if popcorn or ice cream is involved, so get comfy and let your mind drift away into the world of Stars Hallow or the MCU, whichever floats your boat.

9) Scream Along to Your Favorite Song

This might not be feasible if you have roommates, but if have some space to yourself then I would highly recommend this. It’s very fun and much cheaper than going to therapy (although if you need therapy then I would strongly suggest setting up an appointment with a licensed therapist). Sometimes you just feel the need to yell out the lyrics to Taylor Swift’s newest single while making pizza for dinner, and that’s okay.

10) Treat Yo’ Self

I’m not saying you should blow $1,400 on a shopping spree, but if you’ve had a pair of shoes sitting in your Amazon cart for the past few months, just buy them already! Sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up to help brighten your day. Bonus points if you buy something practical because then you won’t have to feel bad about spending too much money on it!
